March Madness

Central Michigan Chippewas vs. Ohio Bobcats

16267691004_6eda951bfc_zTheunissen Stadium-Mt. Pleasant, MI: Madness. Sheer Madness. Attending a baseball game in Michigan in March, one would have to be classified as mad, or crazy, or whatever. The weather actually wasn’t that bad, however, and dealing with a personal loss, my dad and I decided to use baseball as therapy. This was the Chips home opener, so there was a decent crowd on hand (until the sun disappeared, anyway).

Sophomore Nick Deeg took the loss one the mound, but two unearned runs didn’t help his cause. CMU had a couple other defensive lapses that could have been errors, also, so a tough day for the left-hander. Five times during the game the Chippewas had at least two runners in scoring position, and stranded 13 total for the game. Nick Regnier and Alex Borglin had two hits and an RBI each to lead CMU offensively. Logan Regnier and Joe Houlihan each legged out doubles, and freshman Zach McKinstry added a hit and an RBI.

Still a fun day, and getting to a ballgame really helped take our minds off things for a little while. We’ll try to see the Chips play again this season for sure. Final Score: Chippewas 4, Bobcats 6.

CMU Fall World Series Game 5

Team Maroon vs. Team Gold

fall1Theunissen Stadium-Mount Pleasant, MI: We’ve had so much rain here in Michigan this past month, we were very lucky that we caught a break last weekend, and actually enjoyed some fall baseball. The Central Michigan University Chippewas play a split-squad Fall World Series, and we were able to see game five. It was a beautiful day, and with the sun shining down, it seemed a lot warmer than the 65 degree temperature. We usually go to football games this time of year, but the Chips were out of town, and I prefer baseball, anyway.

fall2fall3fall4fall6We each picked teams, with Lily and I taking Team Gold (white uniforms), and Brian and my Dad siding with Team Maroon. Good choice for us, as Gold put three runs across in the first inning. Maroon pitcher Adam Aldred gave up four runs and struck out five in four plus innings. On the other side, Gordon Grasjean was great on the hill, and no-hit the Maroon squad through five innings. He ended up giving up one run on four hits, and struck out two batters in his seven innings of work. Offensively, Adam Collins led the way for the Gold, with two hits and two RBI’s, and Tyler Huntley also added an RBI. For Team Maroon, Logan Regnier’s triple in the seventh accounted for his teams lone run.

fall7fall5fall8fall9fall10Any extra baseball we get in is a plus, and this was a fun and perfect day for it. Very blessed and lucky to be able to spend this time with family watching a game. I’m not looking forward to winter at all, and April can’t come soon enough! Final: Team Gold 6, Team Maroon 1.

Centrally Located

Theunissen Stadium-Central Michigan Baseball

Even in the off-season, the kids and I will always try to find an excuse to go a ballpark, even if it’s closed! We took advantage of this awesome Michigan fall day to catch one last college football game of the year, as Central Michigan hosted Miami. After the game, though, we went over to Theunissen Stadium just to check things out and see if there were any stray baseballs hanging around left over from the Maroon/Gold World Series. We were shut-out in that respect, but we had a great time and CMU got the victory 30-16. Brian was actually a little upset that we were going to a football game instead of a baseball game, but enjoyed running around the ballpark, and really like the football game’s half-time show. Lily really liked the band, too, and Trevor being a football player enjoyed the game itself. Lucky their Papa has season tickets, so no problem when we want to see a game. A fun day over-all, and got some good pics to show off, and some of the baseball stadium I haven’t taken before.

2012 Baseball Trip-Game 9: Fire up Chips!!!

Central Michigan Chippewas vs. Western Michigan Broncos

Theunissen Stadium-Mt. Pleasant, MI: Ahh…back in our home state!!! It was a long drive back, and we were dog tired, but not tired enough to miss a baseball game. On our way back home, we stopped in at my dads’ alma mater, Central Michigan, to see them take on their arch-rivals, the Western Michigan Broncos. We’ve only been to a hand-full of college ballparks, but Central’s Theunissen Stadium is the best one we’ve been at, and probably one of the nicer college stadiums in Michigan. This was CMU‘s final regular season game, so plenty of students and family in attendance to cheer on the home team. Before the game, some of the former baseball alumni and coaches were honored, including Coach Theunissen, who the stadium was named after.  He threw out the first pitch to his grandson Nate Theunissen, who is now the Chippewas all-time hits leader. The game itself was a good one, with the Chips edging the Broncos 3-2. It was a hot day that drained us a bit, but the game went by pretty quick. I was excited, though, because I was about to be reunited with three most important people in my life… Final: CMU 3, WMU 2.
