Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Louisville Mashers vs. Indianapolis Indians (International League)

Louisville Slugger Field-Louisville, KY:  Wow, here it is between Christmas and New Years, and I’m just getting our last game posted.  This game was on September 2, Labor Day Eve, and as with Christmas my dad was visiting from Michigan. Also, like the game we attended in July, the Bats weren’t the Bats, this time playing as the Mashers.  Because this game happened like three months ago, I’m not going to pretend to remember everything about it, but I don know I had fun with Brian and my dad, and that it was a beautiful day.

On to the game, the home team really racked up some runs for us for our last game of the season.  Gabriel Guerrero lead the way, going 4-4 with four runs scored and two RBI. Hernan Iribarren was 2-5 with two runs scored, also.  Brian O’Grady and Steve Selsky knocked in three runs a piece for the Bats, I mean Mashers… On the mound, Justin Nocolino earned the win for Louisville.  He pitched six innings, striking out seven, and only allowing two runs.  Final:  Mashers 10, Indians 4.

Better late then never on this one. At this point though, starting to miss the Bats games and really look forward to the spring.  I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, and I look forward to what 2019 will bring for us.

Bat Boys & Indians

Louisville Bats vs. Indianapolis Indians (International League)

Louisville Slugger Field-Louisville, KY:  We were back at it last weekend for another Bats game.  I really wanted to hit 80’s night the day before, but just couldn’t make it happen.  That promotion is simply tailor made for me, but Bri and I still had a great time on Sunday.  And the weather was perfect for baseball, as it’s been lately.  Also, coming in the gate Brian got a free mini-bat from the Louisville Slugger Museum.  We already have a few of these, but you can never have too many mini-bats.  We’ll be making it back to the museum soon to check out their Lego exhibit, anyway!

On to the game, starting on the mound for Louisville was Cody Reed, who only lasted through the first two innings.  He held Indy off the board, though, waling two, striking out three, and giving up one hit.  Asher Wojciechowski pitched three innings, giving up one Indian run on four hits while striking out five.  Kyle McMyne gave up the only other Indy run, but still earned the win.  He pitched two innings and struck out one batter.  Earning the save was Kevin Shackelford, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Also during the game, Brian got a game ball thrown to him by Indians manager Andy Barkett.   He managed for a few years in the Detroit organization, and must have sensed we were Tiger fans!

The Bats scored one run in the first, and went on to take the lead with three in the seventh.  Leading the offense for the Bats, was catcher Rob Brantly, who went 2/4 with an RBI.  Helping out was Sebastian Elizalde who went 1/3 with an RBI and run scored.  Alex Blandino started the scoring for Louisville in the first, and was 1/2 with an RBI and run scored in the game.  FINAL:  Bats 4, Indians 2.

Another fun day for us, and the Bats had BBoy McCoy, the break dancing bat boy, in attendance to entertain the fans between innings.  I still think that break dancing is very cool, and the movie Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo still holds up, today.  Unfortunately, the times he was out, we were either at the playground, or I couldn’t get my camera or phone focused in in time to catch a photo or video.  I did find a nice video of him on YouTube, though, that I’ll share.  I highly recommend seeing him if he’s at a ballpark near you!

Last game on Labor Day

Louisville Bats vs. Indianapolis Indians (International League)

28865844123_b09e7e9a39_zLouisville Slugger Field-Louisville, KY:  Where did the summer go?  It’s definitely a sad sort of day, the last day of the Minor League regular season, which means the end of 2016 baseball for the Bats.  We were blessed with a beautiful day, however, so Trevor and I decided to take a walk down by the river before the game started.  To our surprise, WLKY was doing a live broadcast down that way covering some Labor Day events, and we ‘just happened’ to walk behind the reporter and got on the news!  Here’s the footage courtesy of Channel 32 WLKY’s YouTube (look for us at the 1:21 and 1:22 mark):

When Trevor and I were done being TV stars, we made our way into the ballpark for the last time in 2016.  We had great seats, as we settled in with our $1 hot dogs and drinks on another 90 degree day.

29525179765_db39d960d6_z29490608326_063f5fb01c_zOn the mound was Keury Mella who was making his Triple-A debut with the Bats.  He pitched a solid seven innings, only giving up three hits, one earned run, while giving up one walk, and striking out six to earn the win.  Relief pitcher Kevin Shackelford came in to get the save.

28865894773_5735d49bbd_z28865918013_927baaa987_zLouisville was lead offensively by Seth Mejias-Brean, who got the Bats on the board in the 4th with an RBI base hit.  He also added and RBI on the eighth inning with a triple.  The go-ahead run came in the seventh, off of a Tony Renda base hit. FINAL:  Bats 4, Indians 1.

28866114753_e167c7413c_z28899910304_09c3deec0e_zAgain, it’s sad that this was our last Bats game of the season, but we will still have some baseball in our future.  Brian is still playing Fall Ball, and the Louisville Cardinals will probably play some exhibition games in the coming month or so, also.  We might even make it back up to the Reds, but that’s still up in the air.  This was a fun day with my son, and feel blessed and lucky for it!

Bats & Birthdays Vol. 2

Louisville Bats vs. Indianapolis Indians (International League)

27801254214_5992093a01_zLouisville Slugger Field-Louisville, KY:   The second part of our birthday adventure took us to the Bats game, as they hosted the rival Indians. Hey, if it’s my birthday, then why is Brian the one who gets to meet Buddy Bat and ride the merry-go-round??!

27765287083_901f35e03e_z28098563010_2e3e82c07a_zIt was another hot one, in the mid-nineties, as we settled in under the sun.  In all honesty, we only lasted there for a couple of innings before finding some seats in the shade.

Louisville was lead offensively by Hernan Iribarren, who went 2-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.  Also having a good day at the dish was Donald Lutz, who contributed and  RBI going 2-4.  Jermaine Curtis and Jesse Winkler each went 1-3 with an RBI and run scored, respectively.

Until then, here’s a little game video:

Farmer debuts in Detroit

rainy8It seems like it was just yesterday that we saw Buck Farmer pitch for the West Michigan Whitecaps. Not exactly, but it was earlier this season that we saw him on the bump at Fifth Third Ballpark. Last night Farmer did become the first to play in West Michigan and Detroit in the same season, helping the Tigers break their four-game losing streak. Farmers’ spot-start wasn’t a spectacular performance, but it was good enough to keep his team in the game, and he pitched a solid five innings giving up four runs. He shut down the Pirates in the first inning, but struggled a bit in the third. Down 4-1, Farmer was bailed out by some other Whitecaps alumni, as Nick Castellanos hit an RBI triple in the first, then broke the tie with a home run in the sixth. Alex Avila also homered in the game to cut into the Pittsburgh lead. Detroit ended up winning the game 8-4, with Farmer not getting the decision.

George Runie Farmer, nicknamed Buck, was a 5th round draft pick by Detroit in 2013 out of the Georgia Institute of Technology. This season he started in West Michigan, going 10-5 with a 2.60 ERA and 116 strikeouts. We also saw him in the Mdwest League All-Star Classic in June. He was promoted to the Erie SeaWolves, but only has a 1-0 record there with a 3.00 ERA. After his spot-start in Detroit, they assigned him to the Toledo Mud Hens. Best of luck to him the rest of the season. I’m sure fans will be seeing more of Farmer in a Tigers uniform in the future.

Logo of the Month: Erie Seawolves

eswLocation: Erie, Pennsylvania

League: Eastern League (Double-A)

Affiliation: Detroit Tigers

Home Field: Jerry Uht Park

Fun Facts: The Erie Seawolves started out up in Welland, Ontario as the Welland Pirates, affiliated with Pittsburg, and played in the short season NY-Penn League. The Pirates relocated to Erie in 1995 to become the Seawolves. This move caused the Frontier League franchise Erie Sailors to move themselves, over to Jamestown, NY. There was another Sailors team in Erie, who also played in the NY-Penn League, but they relocated to become the Hudson Valley Renegades before the independent team used the Sailors name. The Seawolves were upgraded to Double-A status when the Eastern League added two new teams in 1999. They became affiliated with the Angels after the upgrade for two seasons, then signed with the Detroit Tigers in 2001. Since 2003, the team has been rumored for another relocation, but upgrades to Jerry Uht Park have kept the team in place for now. Their mascot is named C. Wolf, and can be seen all over Jerry Uht Park, and in the Erie community. I’m really looking forward to visiting Erie, and taking in my first Seawolves game this summer. Seeing another Tigers affiliate will be a plus also, as many Whitecaps alumni will probably be in the lineup.

Notable Alumni: Justin Verlander, Alex Avila, Curtis Granderson, Omar Infante, John Lackey, Cameron Maybin, Cody Ross

Hens fan goes nuts for Inge

indyingeIt was just another day at the ballpark for this Mud Hens fan. Sit back, have a few beers, throw peanuts at former Tiger Brandon Inge…wait, what? Yes, fans do heckle players at the games, especially at the minor league games where the fans are so close to the action. Last night, however, one fan took things a little too far and began belittling Inge, and even started throwing peanuts at him. Inge, who signed with the Pirates this spring, was playing for the Indianapolis Indians on a rehab assignment against the Mud Hens in Toledo.

“It was just an agitate fan that took it a little too far”, Inge told The Toledo Blade. “That stuff is unfortunate. You can’t avoid it. There’s always going to be a couple of idiots at every game. There’s nothing you can do about it. You can handle it the best you can, and I think we did.”

When the fans assaults became unbearable, Inge’s teammates were quick to defend him. Pirate prospect Jerry Sands and Felix Pie had to be restrained from going after the unruly fan. Sands actually cleared the fence between the stands and dugout, an action that brought a one game suspension from the International League. The fan was escorted out of the ballpark, but still tried throwing beer at the players on their way out (alcohol abuse?). Inge did his best to continue the game, and make it enjoyable for the remaining fans, especially the kids in attendance. He handed out more than a half-dozen baseball to kids.

“Everything was handled very professionally,” Inge stated. “The Mud Hens handled it professionally and I think we handled it as professionally as we could.” Uh, except for Sands, though, Brandon? He did take care of the kids, though: “I know the face of a kid that’s scared. And that man was definitely scaring those kids around the area. I actually saw a couple of kids sitting by themselves, I’m sure their parents were nearby, and I saw them actually get up and move a couple of seats back. They were just like, ‘Wow, we need to move,’. I didn’t want them to feel like that. So I pulled them over and gave them some baseballs. It turned to be, I think, ok.”

None of the Mud Hens players were involved. The Detroit fans have always had a love/hate relationship with Inge, though. Personally I’ve never had a problem with him. He always worked hard and wanted to contribute the best he could. He’s also recently stated he’d like to come back to the Tigers organization when his playing days are done. This is prediction I’ve made many times, however.

“I’d probably, one day, like to stay part of that organization in some way,” Inge stated to the Detroit News. ” One thing I learned through the years in this game is reading people. It’s why I respect Al Kaline so much. He’s still helping the Tigers in so many ways. But what impresses me is that he’s such a great personality reader.” He also stated to the News, “Detroit is home for me. It’s not something you experience for as long as I did and not call it home. In my mind, I’ll always be a Tiger.”

There you have it, folks…. Any way you slice it, though, the fan was in the wrong, and I’m glad he got tossed without anyone getting hurt. Best of luck in your rehab, Brandon.

Arrr…Inge now a Pirate, matey

inge7Former West Michigan Whitecap and Detroit Tiger Brandon Inge was looking for a new home this coming season. Looks like his ship has found port in Pittsburgh  with the Pirates. He has signed a minor league contract with the Pirates with an invitation to major league spring training. Inge’s season was cut short in 2012 with a right shoulder injury which needed surgery. Splitting the season between Detroit and Oakland, he had a .658 on base percentage and 12 home runs. Inge has much versatility, playing third, second, and every outfield position in his major league career. He’s had many games as catcher, too, but hasn’t been behind the plate since 2008. If he makes the Pirate roster, it will most likely be at second base or as a utility player. He could also be assigned to the Indianapolis Indians, and play in one of my favorite ballparks, Victory Field. Inge played for the Whitecaps way back in 1999, batting .244, with 9 home runs, 46 RBI’s, and swiping 15 bases. I still think that when his playing days are done, he’ll be back in the Tigers system as a coach, hopefully in West Michigan.

The return of Nunez

Nunez hit .315 playing for the Whitecaps in 2009

Nunez hit .315 playing for the Whitecaps in 2009

West Michigan Whitecaps alum Gustavo Nunez has returned to the Detroit Tigers in strange turn of events. The 24 year-old short stop was taken by the Pittsburg Pirates in the major league phase of the Rule 5 draft in December of 2011. He was then claimed off waivers by the Arizona Diamondback in October, and is now back in the Tigers organization as the D-Backs have outrighted his contract to the Toledo Mud Hens. He spent the 2012 season on the disabled list for the Pirates, recovering from surgery to his right ankle. As part of re-hab, he did play twelve games between the Gulf Coast League Pirates, Single-A Bradenton Marauders, and the Double-A Altoona Curve, hitting a combined .273. Nunez had a solid year with the Whitecaps in 2009. Playing in 112 games, he hit .315, with 16 doubles, 10 triples, and five home runs. The Tigers needed some depth at middle infield in the system, so I’m glad to see him back, and hope he has a great year in Toledo.
