Autograph Day

Louisville Bats vs. Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (International League)

Louisville Slugger Field-Louisville, KY: Still very far behind, but this game was toward the end of the season when the Bats held an autograph session before the game. Always a highlight of the season for us, so I bought Brian a baseball and we hit the field. The photos sort of speak for themselves!

On to the game, not a great one for the home team. Louisville left a big goose egg on the board, but a couple of players had a good game. Both Gabriel Guerrero and Nick Longhi went 1-3 for the day.On the mound, Jose Lopez took the loss. He pitched five innings, giving up four runs while striking out four. Final: Bats 0, Iron Pigs 4.

A fun day, and always good when the kids can meet the players and get some autographs. We made it to one more before the season ended, so stay tuned.

Pork Roast

Louisville Bats vs. Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (International League)

Louisville Slugger Field-Louisville, KY: Bri and I back at Slugger Field, but this time for more Bats baseball. This game they were hosting the Iron Pigs, which Brian thought was hilarious, and kept making jokes about all night. Yep, that’s my guy…

It was another beautiful night, as Robert Stephenson took the mound for the Bats. He threw a perfect four innings, giving up no hits or runs. The Louisville offense came alive in the fifth inning, however, starting out with a Brandon Dixon solo home run. Hernan Iribarren would later smack a two-run single, extending his team’s lead to 3-0.

Brian and I needed a little snack during the game, again, and this time went with some Kizito cookies. The cookie lady walks around the ballpark with a basket of cookies on her head, and it’s hard to say no! The cookies are really good and priced right, also, which helps to feed hungry kids.

Brian also got a foul ball, and we picked one up in the gift shop with the retro logo on it. It gave us something to throw around at the game, anyway:

The wheels fell of a bit for the Bats in the eight inning, though, as the Iron Pigs tapped relief pitcher Kyle McMyne for four runs on four hits to take the lead. Louisville tied the game at the bottom of the inning, after Phillip Ervin’s base hit that scored Stuart Turner. With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Sebastian Elizade hit an infield single to bring home Zach Vincej for the walk-off win! FINAL: Bats 5, Iron Pigs 4.

Another fun game with Bri. We had another busy week in baseball, and another Bats game the next weekend, so stay tuned. I’ll leave off with a pic of Bri and Buddy Bat:

Opening week in Cincy

Cincinnati Reds vs. Philadelphia Phillies (National League)

Great American Ballpark-Cincinnati, OH: We’re used to taking my dad to a ballgame for his birthday up in Michigan, but since we’re down here now, we decided to invite him down here for a game (or two, or three). We’re also used to some crummy weather up there, so a little cold and rain certainly didn’t keep us from the ballpark down here. This was his first game in Cincy, also, so it was a special day. Lucky for us the usher we met was also a Tiger fan, so he took good care of us. He was nice enough to take a photo of us together, as well as get my dad a certificate for his birthday and first Reds game.

There wasn’t much of a crowd, but we enjoyed our seats in the front row of the upper level. There was a little rain, but we donned our ponchos and kept dry. There wasn’t much of a crowd, so we could pretty much sit where we wanted. After a few innings on the upper level, we moved below to enjoy the rest of the game from there.

On the mound, Rookie Davis was getting his first Major League start, as he is, well, a rookie. He didn’t pitch horrible, but did give up a couple of home runs, allowing four runs in five innings of work, while striking out four batters. Despite being down a few runs, the Reds bullpen was strong. Cody Reed ended up getting the win, throwing two scoreless innings. Drew Storen earned the save by pitching a scoreless ninth and striking out two.

Cincinnati was lead offensively by Adam Duvall, who went 2-4 with a home run and two RBI’s. Also pitching in were Zach Cozart, going 2-3 with two RBI’s; Eugenio Suarez, going 2-3 with two runs scored; and Billy Hamilton, going 2-5. Pitcher Michael Lorenzen also stepped up to the plate and hit a pinch-hit home run! It was a solid day all around offensively for the Reds. Final: Reds 7, Phillies 2.

Despite the weather that seemed to keep most fans away (and the fact that it was a weekday day game), this was a fun game to watch. I’m not sure when we’ll make it back to Cincy again, lots of minor league and college ball the next couple of months to keep us busy!

2011 BBT Day 4: Pouring in Portland…NOT

Portland Sea Dogs vs. Reading Phillies: Hadlock Field-Portland, ME

Here I am again…facing disappointment right in the face. The noon game here has been postponed due to ‘wet grounds’, and I miss an opportunity to see a game in my now favorite Double A ball park. Just like out rain-out in Pawtucket, this was the last game in the series and the teams got an early start to their next road game. The fact that it wasn’t even raining at game time makes it even more frustrating. The weather was better today, so I was able to get some better pics of Hadlock. I also had a friend meet me for the game who trained with me down south. We went to just about every Jacksonville Suns game available, so it would have been nice to share a beer and a ballgame again. We were able to chat with some of the staff here, who let us explore the ball park a little bit more and just talk baseball. It’s nice to know it’s not just the ball players who have to work their way up from the Minors, but the broadcasters and other staff as well. We also learned that the Red Sox are the only MLB team that has a closed circut camera in all of there affiliates to keep track of their prospects. I love the Sea Dogs logo, so they let us spend some time (and money) in the gift shop, too. The only consolation is that we were able to get a jump-start on our voyage south to Boston. We would need that extra time, as Boston treats every Sox game as an event, and the celebration start pretty early in the day.

2011 BBT Day 3: The Dog and Pony Show

Portland Sea Dogs vs. Reading Phillies: Hadlock Field-Portland, ME

For some reason I’ve dreamed of visiting Hadlock Field in Portland for some time, and this ballpark didn’t disappoint. It’s smaller than you might think for Double A, but it’s very cozy. You kind of feel boxed in, but in a good way…sort of like leaving the rest of the world behind when your watching a ball game. One really unique aspect of Hadlock is that the home bullpen is elevated inside the right field wall. The players have to take a set of stairs to a doorway in the wall to enter the game. The Sea Dogs also have their own version of the Green Monster, er, Monsta, with the Maine Monster in left field being a Boston Red Sox affiliate and all. This was another game with low attendance due to the horrible weather, but at least they played it. The Reading Phillies were in town and we were seated right behind their dugout. I have to give a shout out to Reading first baseman Matt Rizzotti for hitting two home runs in the game and throwing me a game ball. Things didn’t go the Sea Dogs way in the game, but they had one more game in the series to get revenge. I was really looking forward to the noon game the next day. Due to the weather I didn’t get some better pics of the stadium, but will have some in the next post because the weather was better the next day. Final Score: Sea Dogs 3, Phillies 14.
